A Run to Remember

“Drink water, stretch, and don’t give up.”
These are the three main keys to cross country, according to Jill Byars. To many, cross country isn’t much of a sport; however, to seniors Jill Byars and Mary Claire Trautman, running is a part of life. Cross country is a very personal sport. Yes, athletes are running against other people, but they are also competing against their own mind and body. Mary Claire and Jill have persevered through the ups and downs of cross country for 6 years, and have not regretted a moment of it. All of their training came to a point at the regional meet in Booneville Mississippi on October 22, 2020.
At the meet, “Believer” by Imagine Dragons blared as the six teams of runners approached their mark. After a quick prayer and the sound of a bullhorn, the race began. The late afternoon heat definitely didn’t aid the runners as they weaved through the trees, hopped over roots, and endured the hills. At the final stretch, parents, coaches, and teammates rallied around the track and shouted their support. Amory fans cheered on Jill and Mary Claire as they crossed the finish line in victory!
